Angkor Wat, generally agreed by historians that it represents the apex of Khmer architectural and sculptural genius. Perhaps one of the most beautiful scenes is watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II and was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, the protector of creation. The layout of Angkor Wat is based on mandala or sacred design of the Hindu cosmos, is a five towered temple shaped like a lotus bud and represents Mount Meru, the mythical abode of the gods and the centre of the universe. Unusual amongst Khmer temples, Angkor Wat faces west toward the setting sun, a symbol of death. Another theory for this western direction is simply that it was a better direction in relation to the town.
