At about ten years a Masai girl is very much nearing the age of full responsibility. As they enter puberty, female genital mutilation (FGM), or circumcision will be performed as part of the rite of initiation to adulthood.  Presently this tradition is prohibited by Kenyan law but it is difficult to enforce these private ceremonies. Traditionally they would be married off immediately after circumcision, sometimes as early as nine years of age.  With the encouragement of human rights organizations who educated the parents and girls of the effects - emotional and physical - of circumcision, many girls now are refusing FGM and opting to continue with school.
