In the small village of Kolong, a young mother journeys far to collect over 100 pounds of firewood in order to build her Manyata --a wood-framed, dung and ash hut. She uses a panga (a sharp sickle-like knife) to individually sever each branch, then carries it back home. Most girls from Kolong never had the opportunity to go to school past 5th grade, and instead undergo Female Genital Mutilation and are sold into marriage as early as the age of nine or ten. Matanya's Hope offers academic scholarships to girls such as these, before they are circumcised and married off.
