Villages and traditional settlements in Santorini were build very close to each other on the highest point of the Caldera cliffs. This protected the houses from pirate attacks and from the effects of bad weather conditions. Due to lack of raw materials the houses where literately carved on the cliffs creating the traditional Canava apartments. On Santorini and other Greek islands, the traditional architecture is comprised of bright white colored buildings with blue painted doors.
