The Incas began building Machu Picchu in AD 1400, but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. It is thought that its inhabitants may have died from smallpox introduced by travelers before the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the area. Most archaeologists think that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472)
