Cambodia is a Theravada Buddhist country otherwise known as Buddhism of the south. Buddhism has come and gone in Cambodian history, and became the Cambodian state religion in the 13th century, apart from the Khmer Rouge period (1975-1979). It has a following of approximately 95% of the population. It is customary for young men to join the monastery for a period of time to gain merit for themselves and their families. Some will stay for a few days while others will dedicate their lives to their religion.
