This young Maasai girl spends her days caring for her siblings while her mother searches for water and wood for the fire.   Her father is also gone often for days at a time grazing the cattle, sheep and goats very far away from the village. This young girl child might never go to school as she has been selected to care for the younger children.  By nine, many Maasai girls are taken for FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and are then sold into marriage for the price of cows.   If the girl refuses, she is considered to bring much shame upon the family.   The child on her back is covered with this dung and ash mixture the families use to construct their small three roomed homes.
