The National Theatre was opened for the first time on June 11, 1881 for a total of 11 performances. The theatre was then closed to complete final touches when disaster struck and the theatre was badly damaged by fire. Within 47 days a million guldens (currency of the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1754-1892) were donated by the general public. Two years later it was re-opened on November 18, 1883 and remains the embodiment of the will of the Czech nation for its national identity and independence.
