Before crossing a crocodile infested river like the Mara gnu tend to take much time. They may even mass near or towards the river bank and attempt to cross several times before failing. There does not seem to be synchrony in the way they cross, any of the animals can take the initiative to cross first, even a very young calf can lead the way. The herd will then come jumping in, in a panic to cross to the opposite bank as fast as possible as they try to avoid being taken by a crocodile.
