In the Maasai Mara, like many other places throughout the world, the problem of forced early marriages of children is considered to be a part of the culture. Since the number of wives is indicative of a man's wealth, a girl as young as nine years old can be sold into marriage with a man who already has up to ten wives. Before marriage, the girls must undergo FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) also known as FGC (Female Genital Cutting). In Kenya, it is now an illegal practice to marry a child bride, however most homesteads are situated in extraordinarily rural locations, which makes it difficult to monitor such activity.
